Hi Friends!

I wanted to keep this letter short and sweet for you all, just a little recap of this whirlwind that is my life. Between filming and traveling, creating and playing, this summer has been amazing. I’ve been keeping busy with my relentless DJ tour, collaborating with some incredibly talented individuals, and working on some really great projects. I am sitting here writing this on the 33rd story of a beautiful hotel in Hawaii and the view is breathtaking. The island is welcoming, as islands usually are… it’s been great to jump right into work and i am excited for the chance to dig my feet into the sand! This is going to be a crazy next couple of weeks and I can’t wait to share the happenings with you all!

A Tribute to NUJABES

Nujabes aka Jun Seba 瀬葉淳, (February 7, 1974 – February 26, 2010) was one of Japan’s premiere producer/DJ of hip-hop.  Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.

In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.

Shing02 – rap activist, peace advocate, inventor. Born in Tokyo 1975, raised in Tanzania, England, and Japan. Shing02 landed in SF Bay Area in ‘89 after the quake at the age of 15. After a move to Berkeley for schooling in ‘93 he became immersed in the local hiphop scene that launched dozens of acts worldwide. Initially he used his art skills to get acquainted with the budding East Bay scene. In ‘96 Shing02’s music made its way back to Japan, then partnered with Mr. Higo of Mary Joy Recordings, garnering tremendous support in his homeland. Currently he is working on first English album “RxOxTxO”.

Zita: A staple in the Bay Area for years, lady DJ Zita has been steadily building a DJ queendom beat by beat. Known as a party rocker, classic record provider, tireless promoter and meticulous organizer, Zita has brought her sisterhood sounds to dancefloors on both coasts and overseas since 1999. Her captivating sound spans the eras and blends genres of body-rockin’ music; she’ll seamlessly segue from boombox classic hip hop to mothership trunk funk, spin smooth R&B treats along with timeless soul heroines and heroes, flip reggae dancehall riddims, throwback to ’80s pop freestyle, and groove the dancefloor with her soulful deep house. At first one of only a handful of women on the scene, Zita established Bay Area Sistah Sound (BASS) to unite women DJs and performers. She can also be found most weekends holding down residencies in San Francisco and Oakland as part of DJ duo Golden Soundscapes with partner Dmadness, as well as producing fresh events spotlighting women in hip hop and guesting at many premier music nights and venues. With her dazzling style, fierce determination, and golden touch on the wheels, DJ Zita has changed the landscape and continues to shine.

J-Boogie: San Francisco resident and world-renowned DJ/producer J-Boogie continues to challenge the boundaries of the music world across genres, styles, languages and borders throughout his 18-year career. This truly unique artist speaks to his listeners through a diverse musical language he created integrating techniques and musical genres including dub, soul, hip–hop, reggae, funk, Latin, afro-beat, bhangra, dancehall, disco, electro and house. Constantly revolutionizing the game, creating new sounds, and always keeping fans on their feet, J-Boogie continues to lift music to its full potential through his distinct approach and one-of-a-kind style.

Hawaii International Film Festival

As a kick off to the 2010 Fall season, this exciting mixer will be the first time for guests to view the unveiling of this season’s iconic Key Visual Image, several of the festival’s never before seen up-and-coming films including a chance to see 10 film trailers, and mingle with HIFF staff, the board of directors and Ohana members. The event is free and open to the public and is being held on Thursday, August 19th at Nextdoor … in Downtown Honolulu at 43 N. Hotel Street, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Guests can also enjoy free pizza from J.J. Dolans, raffle tickets, giveaways, and the chance to show HIFF support by purchasing a HIFF 30 Button.

New members are always welcome and for those who join as HIFF Ohana Members at the evening’s event will receive a discount on membership fees. Plus, anyone who joins or renews their HIFF membership by the end of 2010, will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a trip to the Seattle International Film Festival in June 2011. The trip includes two round trip tickets, hotel accommodations and platinum passes to the Seattle festival.
