Thursday February 23 2012
8pm-2am | Ages 19+ | Pabst Blue Ribbon Drink Special

Tired of that weak Hip-hop they keep selling you on the radio? Miss that old feeling it used to bring? Look no further. Celsius 7 is here & ready to take the world by storm.Dope lyrics, bangin’ beats, & a stage show that brings back the energy of the culture. This is classic Hip-hop for true heads.

Following the great success of his first solo album “Wanderlust”, Celsius 7 (half of the popular Bay Area crew Psychokinetics) is back at it and ready to release his second head-noddin’ solo project, “Life Well Spent.”

After a year and a half of hard work, much travel, and many collaborations, the project is finally done, and it appears to have been well worth the wait. With some of the underground’s dopest producers on the roster, and features by Dirt Nasty, Baby Jaymes, and Foreign Legion to name only a few, Life Well Spent is sure to be a classic album that will add to the Bay’s rich Hip-hop tradition.

Celsius 7 delivers in the studio, but as anyone who’s seen him live knows, he’s an energetic, engaging, and infectious performer on stage as well. These qualities have helped Celsius 7 and Psychokinetics build a strong fan base from Asia to Europe to the States, and of course all the way back to the scenic Bay, where they’ve shared the stage with such hip-hop luminaries including KRS-One, Biz Markee, DJ Premier, Black Sheep, Too Short, Hieroglyphics, Blackalicious, Jungle Brothers, Digital Underground, Kool Keith, and many more.

Witness why Celsius 7′s writings have earned him a John Lennon Songwriting Award and also runner-up in the Independent Music Awards in 2005. A Hip-hop fan since ’79, Celsius 7 is true to the art and culture, and still believes in the power that the music holds to meaningfully captivate and inspire. In a world full of imitators and often soul-less radio, Celsius 7 is a breath of fresh air.

Tinker
Kid Kameleon

Thursday February 16th 2012
8pm-2am | Ages 19+ | ~

Tinker .:
Tinker (aka Sara Kremer) is multi-media artist, electronic musician, and event curator currently based in San Francisco. As a dancer, performer, and traveler, she traces her aesthetics back through West Coast festivals, Chicago clubbing, and London squat parties, to its roots in the Colorado rave scene of the mid 90s. Her musical foundation includes voice, piano, and percussion, as well as a lasting love of Gamelan that has taken her on tour to Bali to perform with the highly regarded group Gamelan X.

Creativity gained from fourteen years in the electronic music scene flows though her veins. Like a clockmaker in his shop or a passionate scientist her lab, she is always creating, changing patterns and substituting beats in her sets, twisting them into something new and fresh. Using tools of live sampling and performance within Ableton and her trusty APC, or field recordings from her extensive travels, Tinker mixes up a variety of ingredients that will keep you on your toes. A love of wee things and bell sounds make her name doubly fitting, and her playful sets have been described as beat-driven, melodic, glitch-y, and experimental. She rebels against genre, mixing dubstep, wonky, breaks, cumbia, downtempo, hip-hop and more in a single set. She has a captivating presence, earned through years of dance and fire-performance, inspiring audiences to swoon at her lush sonics or dance like mad at her driving beats and bass.

Tinker is the resident laptop mistress of the long-standing and well-respected San Francisco arts collective False Profit. She has directed the chill stage at False Profit’s annual campout Priceless, curated a stage at Yuri’s Night Bay Area @ NASA Ames (for which she was also a founding creative visionary), and has thrown numerous other legendary underground parties in the Bay and beyond. Performing everywhere from the esteemed Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Cal Academy of Sciences to dark and dank basement clubs in Berlin, she has shared the stage with Boxcutter, the Glitch Mob, Tom Burbank, Take, Afta-1, Anenon, Deru, Eliot Lipp, Dr. Toast, Random Rab, EPROM, Kid Kameleon, Lazer Sword, David Last, and more. She is a fast-blossoming producer in her own right, creating tunes that are getting noticed within the fertile west coast music scene. Be sure to catch this mischief-maker put smiles on faces and wiggles in the hips of her listeners.

–

Kid Kameleon .:
Kid Kameleon is DJ, promoter, writer, blogger, historian, archivist, and fan of electronic music. He’s been that way for 15 years. He’s from North Carolina, but ended up in New York in the late ’90s and early ’00s. He moved to the Bay Area in 2004, and currently lives in San Francisco. His performances are wild, eclectic, flamboyant, humorous, energetic and passionate, and he is a true believer in the DJ’s unique ability to be a curator and narrator. A prolific mixer, writer and journalist, he keeps one ear tuned to the new and cutting edge and the other to the glories of the past. He spins heads and feet the physical and digital world over.

“Hip Hop smoothed out on an R & B tip with a Pop Appeal to it!”

Some of the Most popular artists who helped define the era include: Run DMC, LL Cool J, Kool Moe Dee, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, MC Lyte, KRS-ONE, NWA, Cypress Hill, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Gang Starr, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Boot Camp Clik…

The Golden Era of Hip Hop refers to roughly the mid eighties up to the late nineties when Hip Hop, in this sense the rapping and beatmaking aspect of it, was known and appreciated for its Lyrical content (MCing or Emceeing) its musical depth and its stark differentiation from other musical genres of the day. Influenced by earlier forms of music such as R and B, Jazz, Reggae and The Blues; Hip Hop during this time matured and touched upon many political and social issues affecting urban America which overwhelmingly focused on the African American experience of ghettos, gang life, drugs, black identity, poverty and racism. This era is known for the flourishing of different regional styles and a freeing up of the manner in which rap music was written, composed and performed these regional styles contributed to much tension and rivalry as well. This friction was exploited by record companies to boost interest and sales. It is this rivalry along with other factors that led to a decline and eventual end of the Golden Age.

The Master of the Beat, legendary turntablist and producer DJ Krush celebrates 20 years in the business with a special DJ set for his Hawaii fans. To add to this special night Boston-bred MC Mr. Lif will fly in and perform.

DJ Krush has seen hip-hop culture transform on a global scale. In his native Japan, he’s witnessed and greatly affected its growth from the ground up. His imitable style helped forge the early identity of James Lavelle’s influential Mo’Wax label, and collaborations with Gang Starr’s Guru, the Roots’ Black Thought, and a host of other MCs have cemented his celebrity status among the Hip-Hop elite. Krush has accomplished something few others have managed to achieve: a cultural intersection of styles that expands upon the width and breadth of Eastern influence. With Jaku (which translates to “peace and calm”), this theme is fully realized. A blend of MCs, including Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock, who lay down vocals over the masterful work of Ken Shima (jazz pianist), Shuuzan Morita (shakuhachi), Tetsuro Naito (kodo drums), Akira Sakata (saxophone) and a host of others.

DJ Krush’s importance as a music producer cannot be underestimated. Without him some of the biggest artists in the scene would simply not exist. To commemorate 20 years in music production Dj Krush has started a monthly single series that will run through 2012. The first four singles have now been released, and are available on iTunes.

-

Mr. Lif (born Jeffrey Haynes) is an American Hip Hop artist from Boston, Massachusetts. Often noted for his political lyrics, he has released two studio albums on El-P’s Definitive Jux label and one on Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Mr. Lif is also a member of the Hip Hop group The Perceptionists with long-time friends and collaborators Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One. Mr. Lif has also collaborated with Murs, Aesop Rock, Blueprint, Otis Grove, and Thievery Corporation.

Jeffrey Paradise – After graduating he was disenchanted with SF’s disappearing fashion industry and rigid music scenes. Then DJ Jeffrey Paradise was born, quickly he created his first and now legendary Frisco Disco parties hosting the first multi-genre dance party in San Francisco.

Success followed: write ups in Billboard Magazine, tours with Out Hud, The Rapture, Felix the House Cat; numerous appearances at the WMC, SxSW, and Coachella; exclusive gigs with DJ AM, residencies in La and Las Vegas…

Plus new parties in San Francisco: Blow Up and Club 1994 where Jeffrey had picks his favorite artists like Justice, Interpol, Chromeo, Glass Candy, !!!, Steve Aoki, DJ Funk, Uffie, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs to preform. His parties are easily the most exciting and charged parties in the city.

Not satisfied with DJing alone, Jeffrey’s other musical project Paradise Boys gained attention from the press, their peers, and music fans all over the world as the “band to look out for”-SPIN; “Paradise Boys weigh in with a stellar track and smoking remixes”-URB; “best Bay Area band”-Filter; “stand out tracks”-Fader; “crisp, smooth, mildly petulant, definitely sleazy, and utterly irresistible on the dance floor”-SF Weekly.

Jeffrey’s musical vision, open mindedness and sense of adventure makes his sets mind blowing and memorable to both the dance and rock music scenes internationally. Get into him.

A staple in the Bay Area for years, lady DJ Zita has been steadily building a DJ queendom beat by beat. Known as a party rocker, classic record provider, tireless promoter and meticulous organizer, Zita has brought her sisterhood sounds to dancefloors on both coasts and overseas since 1999. Her captivating sound spans the eras and blends genres of body-rockin’ music; she’ll seamlessly segue from boombox classic hip hop to mothership trunk funk, spin smooth R&B treats along with timeless soul heroines and heroes, flip reggae dancehall riddims, throwback to ’80s pop freestyle, and groove the dancefloor with her soulful deep house. At first one of only a handful of women on the scene, Zita established Bay Area Sistah Sound (BASS) to unite women DJs and performers. She can also be found most weekends holding down residencies in San Francisco and Oakland as part of DJ duo Golden Soundscapes with partner Dmadness, as well as producing fresh events spotlighting women in hip hop and guesting at many premier music nights and venues. With her dazzling style, fierce determination, and golden touch on the wheels, DJ Zita has changed the landscape and continues to shine.

DJ Cocheze did one show with KRS-One at the age of 18 and went on to be his personal tour DJ for the next 4 years. He completed over 400 shows in over 20 countries including Japan, Africa and Spain. He has not only rocked the battle scene, but shared the stage in multiple clubs with artist such as Guru, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Tribe Called Quest, Rhazel, Method Man, MC Lyte, and more. He has a degree in Recording Engineering that fine-tuned his battle skills and helped him win multiple Hip Hop Elements battles and the Southeast Regional Guitar Center battles in Orlando, Florida. He now resides in San Francisco where he has had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the worlds most talented DJ’s and rock some of the biggest parties the Bay has to offer. Living in SF has broadened his musical aptness to include other genres of music such as House and Electro and he has continued to grow as a musician, not just a DJ.
